Special transport services
Special transport services include medical transportation and paratransit. We operate a booking centre for special transport services. Länstrafiken coordinates all medical transportation in Västerbotten as well as paratransit in many municipalities.
The booking centre coordinates special transport services within paratransit and medical transportation. Special transport services is a collective name for various journeys that are fully or partly paid for by society, such as paratransit and medical transportation. Special transport services are a complement to scheduled public transport.

Medical transportation
Medical transportation is a journey between your home and a healthcare provider. For example, it can be a doctor, physiotherapist, dentist or counsellor. The journey can be made by bus, train or private car, for example. You are responsible for getting to and from your planned visit. If, for health reasons, you are unable to travel by public transport or your own car, you may be entitled to medical transport by taxi. In this case, a certificate from the healthcare provider is required.
Medical transportation by taxi or special vehicle
If the healthcare staff assesses that you need to travel to your appointment by taxi or special vehicle due to your medical condition, you can book the trip at the vooking centre for special transport services. Book your trip no later than two weekdays before the planned visit.
Please note that the healthcare staff will wait until after your appointment before deciding whether you have medical reasons that require you to go home by taxi or special vehicle. In this case, the healthcare staff will book the journey home.
If you become ill and need care quickly, you can contact the booking centre around the clock to book a trip.
Cancelling a trip
You must cancel both the trip and the appointment if you are unable to attend a planned appointment. You can cancel your trip by calling the booking centre. If you do not cancel the trip, you may be required to pay for the trip.
Medical transportation outside the county
Contact the booking centre for help with arranging travel outside the county. To do this, it is required that:
- You have a specialist referral from Region Västerbotten for which the booking centre has received a certificate.
- The certificate will show you which mode of transport you need and whether you need to have a companion with you.
By agreement with the booking centre, you can also arrange the trip yourself. You will then receive a grant based on what is written on the certificate. It is the actual travel costs that are reimbursed. You apply by sending tickets and a receipt from your healthcare visit to the regional authority.
You can seek care outside the county on your own initiative, but then you will have to pay for the entire trip yourself.
For questions about high-cost protection (högkostnadsskydd), free passes for medical transportation, allowances for own travel and questions about submitted medical certificates, we refer you to the Patient Travel Unit.
